48 before its too late

Today is May 29th Memorial day. Had a great weekend in Shenandoah National park #6. Camped at Loft Mountain National Park Campground, high up on the mountain . Hiked 3.5 miles on the AT around the campground the friday. Spectacular views .

Saturday we hiked to some waterfalls, great going there, not so great coming back, 4 miles straight uphill ! 10 mile round trip. Certainly got our steps in. And a well earned beer at the end of it.

Sunday was very misty all day, could only see 10ft in front, so no point in doing any hiking, spent the day catching up on chores ( yes we do have chores on the road !!).

Today , Monday, started off great. Got to see Mama Bear and her cub.

Started to travel to Williamsburg but developed a transmission problem, limped to an RV site for the night (it was Memorial Day, no garages open) and opened a beer !

Today is Friday May 26th. Since Sunday we have travelled through Rhode Island #11, Connecticut #12, New York #6, New Jersey #13, Pennsylvania #14, Delaware #15 , Maryland #16, West Virginia #17,and Virginia #18…Sounds crazy, but remember some of these are just very small states.

Tuesday we stopped at Orange County Choppers in Newburgh NY, had a tour of the factory, met Jason Pohl , one of the few remaining originals from the show. Nice bloke. Got to sit on a couple of bikes and brought the obligatory t-shirt .

From here we headed to Bethlehem PA for the night , stopping at a casino (free overnight parking). It was here we discovered the old steel works that had been shut down in 1995.  Instead of demolishing the works , they had preserved them and it is weird and wonderful all at the same time. Here are a couple of pics , but I will write a separate blog with more pics later. We were just in awe !!

Wednesday we travelled through Delaware , Maryland , West Virginia and Virginia.  Stopping at Harpers Ferry.  Thursday we visited Harpers Ferry National Historic Park #5.

Now today is Friday and we have discovered a slight problem. We or I should say “I” forgot it is Memorial weekend and could not figure out why all the campgrounds were full.  Keep an eye on the dates Sam !!!!! DUH !!!  Anyway we are currently camped south of Shenandoah National Park #6 which we plan on exploring this weekend along with a spot of boondocking !!

After breakfast and a walk along the old railway, we headed out on Piglet up Route 6 to Provincetown. First stop was a trip to Race Point Lighthouse. It was open house today that only happens once a year , so we got lucky !  And if you are interested you can rent it to stay in. That’s after a 2.5 mile 4×4 drive though the sand dunes.  The lighthouse is the official logo for Cape Cod Chips. Who knew. I personally prefer Walkers !!

From there we headed into Provincetown center and harbor. This was the first stopping place of the pilgrims before heading to Plymouth in search hof fresh water. Loved this town , very pretty and really refreshing to see, openly gay friendly .                We climbed the Pilgrim Monument, built in 1907 to 1910 to commemorate the first landing of the Mayflower on November 21 1620.  It is the tallest all granite structure in the USA. Got my 10,000 steps in no prob !!

Next stop Rhode Island , Salute xxx

Maine, set up camp on Tuesday, just chilled for the evening as we could actually sit outside !  Wednesday we headed into Acadia National Park#2, around 10.30am. Brought our annual National Park ticket $80 to last for the rest of the trip. From there we headed to Gorman’s Mountian , short but steep hike up to fabulous views across the bay and Park .

At the summit we had lunch and then descended, when we decided to buy fresh lobster on the way back to camp. And it was soooo goood.

Today , Thursday 18th, we were up before dawn , 4am to be precise. Why on earth would you do that you ask ?  This is why !

Drove on piglet to the top of Cadillac Mountain to watch the sunrise at the first place the sun touches North American soil.  A little cloudy but well worth the effort.   After that it was back to camp for a cuppa and a snooze in bed.  After brunch we headed back into the park for another gentle hike around the coastline.  It really is beautiful.

Tomorrow’s we head south to Plymouth and Boston. It is beer O’Clock here now. Cheers xxx

So Ontario was state #5, on Saturday May 13th we travelled back into USA and through New York State #6, it poured with rain all day so continued into the Adirondack mountains and stayed on the New York/ Vermont border. Sunday may 14th drove though Vermont #7, very pretty state, lots of old Americana and of course Ben and Jerry’s Factory Tour, which had to be done ! It was Mothers day !!! From there it was a short hop to Cold Hollow Cider Mill ( Harvest Hosts) for the night. Very good cider !!! Still rained all day and night ..

Left early Monday morning, stopping in Cabot to buy cheese, the closet thing to English cheddar . Entered New Hampshire #8, drove through Mexico, Peru and Manchester. So far in such a short time ;-0 . Once again raining most of the time, finally entered Maine #9. Stayed at an amazing Harvest Host, Misty Acres Alpaca Farm. Really nice owners and super cute alpaca !!! And bald eagles nesting as well.

Woke up this morning to sunshine !! Yeah and 70F temps, finally. Drove for couple of hours and are now near Acadia National Park in a campground. Wifi in these places sucks…going to have to come up with something else. Tomorrow heading into the park for some hiking and hopefully picking up lobster on the way home !

So we arrived in Canada #5 yesterday, Thursday May 11th. Stayed the night at a very nice vineyard in Lincoln Ontario through Harvest hosts. Then today moved onto Niagara Falls. Checked into a KOA site where apparently we got the last remaining site…ummm looked a bit empty to us, but what do we know.
Set up camp , had lunch , sorted Cole ( who is doing very well btw). Then hopped on Piglet and headed off for the Falls. ( Piglet is our vespa).
WOW.. The falls are quite amazing, we are obviously on the Canadian site (DUH)..
Nature is quite incredible. The water falls at a rate of 34 million gallons a minute. So much power. Well worth seeing and they should be on the wonders of the world.

Arrived back to a packed KOA.. OMG this is party city clearly, thank god we are only here for one night ! Heading back into USA tomorrow and heading up towards Arcadia National Park over 2 days .. Catch up with you then.

So the first hiccup as i said the other day was the clean water holding tank sprung a leak. After Chris spent time in the guts of the rig, around the rig and generally all up in it. We decided to give in and take it to a service center. Shout out to Forest City Motorhomes in London Ontario. They could get us in the next day. Long story cut short, turned out to be a split in a seam in the upper corner of the lower holding tank. Something we never would have found by ourselves ! Problem numero uno fixed !

Problem #2. They have had an awful lot of rain in the north….So the ground is very soft.. Yep you got it ! We got stuck. Had to call a tow truck out . Lesson learnt “walk it before you drive it ” ! But in the grand scheme of things , these were minor ! No one was hurt in the making of this production !

Finally have some wi-fi again. So will hopefully post more tonight. Been an interesting last couple of days , just some hiccups in the journey but all sorted now. Currently in Canada and off to Niagara Falls this pm.

Hi folks

Sorry there was no day 2 blog, but we were north of Cincinnati Ohio #3 boon docking on  vineyard. So no wi-fi or cell phone signal. This will happen a couple of times a week probably. But we did visit Mammoth Cave NP #1.

So today we left Ohio #3 and entered Michigan #4 , 200 miles with a total of 640 miles. Currently south of Detroit. And our first problem has arisen ! Clean water tank is not holding water, which is not an issue if we are hooked up. But we like boon docking (i.e. vineyards/farms etc) so hopefully will get it fixed in next few days.
